The beautiful, airy Glass Thorsteinson Staircase in the newly rejuvenated National Arts Centre lobby was the perfect place to film the anthem of this year’s Music Monday: Oscar Peterson’s “Hymn To Freedom”. All three Cantiamo choirs spent Monday evening recording the version of this piece of Canadian music history that will be used to prepare thousands of students and teachers across Canada who will sing it together on Music Monday: May 6th, 2019. Written in 1962, it quickly became an anthem of the civil rights movement, and I think that it is still very relevant today as we work to make Canada a fair and equal place for all. It was challenging to sing this piece so many times over and over again, but it was so rewarding in the end as we had pushed ourselves to make a great recording and video. More importantly, through the Coalition for Music Education in Canada, the piece will be used to help bring so many young musicians and singers together and help show how amazing it is when music is part of children’s education.
