Welcome to our 2019-2020 Season

A warm welcome to all of our new Cantiamo choristers and their families; and welcome back to our returning families and friends of the choir!

We have already had a busy few weeks with registration, shirt and concert dress fittings, plus a full-day workshop, and a parent meeting. Artistic Director, Jackie Hawley shared with us a few of the many activities, events and concerts that our choirs will be involved with this season. It was great to hear that we will continue with our annual overnight Camp for the older girls – a beautiful outdoor setting where we have time for more team building, mentoring and extra focus on choral, vocal skills, and musicianship. Camp is a highlight for us and a great way to launch the year.

Our concert dates are now posted, here. Mark your calendars now. Details will soon follow about our first formal concert: “A merry little Christmas” , where all of our choristers, ranging in age from 5 through 18 will be featured.

This season we are also thrilled to be performing alongside other choral groups beginning with a multi-choir performance at the European Union Christmas Concert to be held at the Notre Dame Cathedral Basilica – a stunning location and always a sold out event. We are particularly proud that we will have a joint concert performance with Montreal-based Choeur Maha. This choir is home to composer-in-residence Kim Farris-Manning, and conductor Megan Batty – both of these music professionals are Cantiamo Alumni. It is very inspiring to our organization and its members to see our former Cantiamo choristers out there still making beautiful music!

Later in 2020 we are honoured to be a guest choir at the Singing Drum concert, hosted by the Baobob Youth Performers. Cantiamo has had the pleasure of working with Baobob over the years and this 25th anniversary concert will be a very special event and tribute to Kathy Armstrong and all of the work she has done in the music community.

We are energized by the commitment and enthusiasm of our Choral Education Team who go above and beyond to make every rehearsal night productive and fun. It is wonderful to once again hear all of the voices and piano playing eminating from the various rehearsal spaces at Trinity – it is a musical beehive on Monday evenings!

Our Team would want nothing more than all children to experience the same joy and benefits of singing, as such, Cantiamo is once again inviting schools and music educators in our community to the annual “Choralfest” held at Canterbury High School. This will also be our 15th year as the mentor choir (and Artistic Director) for a national event called “Music Monday”, a collaboration with the Coalition for Music Education in Canada and the National Arts Centre. We were honoured in 2019 to be given the opportunity to record the Music Monday anthem (Oscar Peterson’s Hymn to Freedom), and to be featured in the official video.

Our older, experienced Cantiamo Girls will once again have opportunities to shine as musicians and young leaders as they take on role modelling tasks and mentoring positions within the organization. These dedicated young woman are often already busy students who generously provide their extra free time to work with our new and younger choristers at rehearsals and workshops.

We are so proud of them all, and extremely grateful. As a choir we are also grateful to Trinity United Church who has welcomed us over the years to use their facility as our rehearsal and meeting space. And to our large and supportive parent community. Without community support, generous donations, and our tireless volunteers we would not be able to direct all of our energy towards creating and sharing our beautiful music. So thank you.

The 2019-2020 season has officially started, and it is going to be fabulous!

Yours in Song,

Cantiamo Choirs of Ottawa
