Mission and Values

The Cantiamo Girls Choir of Ottawa develops integrity, empathy and self-confidence in its choristers through choral excellence, leadership training and educational and community outreach.

Our motto is:  Music,  Leadership,  Outreach.

Music

We study and perform the finest repertoire, with a particular emphasis on the works of Canadian composers. Cantiamo has premiered over twenty Canadian choral compositions.  We participate in choral events at home and away from home.  We record our music and concerts in order to reach a wider audience in the community, provide another educational experience to the choristers and contribute to our operating budget.

Leadership

Our Artistic Director is a highly qualified music educator who develops the vocal capabilities and musical literacy of our choir members.  Our Accompanist, Associate Conductor, and Composer-In-Residence, also a highly qualified professional, supports the vision of the artistic director and the development of the choristers.  Mentoring is part of our program and we provide choir members with the opportunity to mentor less experienced singers.  When appropriate, we provide conducting and accompanying opportunities to our advanced choristers.

Outreach

We perform educational outreach through our three part community outreach and music education program which consists of our teacher workshop, school visits and Music Monday where we are partners with the National Arts Centre.  We support the Ottawa community by performing at local charitable events, churches, schools and retirement/nursing homes throughout our choral season.

Concerts

Aside from our own concerts, we perform to support community events and have consequently enjoyed performing at the Canada and the World Pavilion, Ottawa City Hall, the Ottawa Congress Centre, the Canadian Museum of Civilization and the National Arts Centre and various hospitals, churches and retirement homes. Cantiamo also participated in Festival 500 in Newfoundland (2005, 2013) and the Kaleid Festival in Woodstock (2006, 2007) and Ottawa (2010).

General

We hold regular weekly rehearsals, additional workshops throughout our choral season and maintain high performance standards.  We provide the opportunity for boys to participate in our training choir as an introduction to choral singing.  We are a registered charity.
